June Guest Blog -- Val Hall

Our June guest blogger is Val Hall of Be Quick Feed and Farrier in Colorado.

Hello fellow horse lovers. Thank you for your support of the Holistic Horse Coop. I am looking forward to visiting via blog this June 2010.

My name is Val Hall. My introduction to horses was as a young girl of 4 working with my Dad and Grandparents. Yikes that was a few years ago! I have very fond memories of the many hours playing on my pony in the arena. Stopping only when grandmother insisted it was time to let the pony rest and for me to eat. Growing up included working with many different horses insisting Dad help me get to all the High School Rodeos. As an adult my life continues to be centered on horses.

Horses are my source of inspiration always challenging me to learn more and maintain teamwork. They are a motivation to complete each day. At this point in my life they are my livelihood. My husband and I together run a business; Be Quick Feed and Farrier. We strive to be a resource for equine care “from the ground up”. We remain dedicated to increasing knowledge related to care and support of the equine including feed and hoof care. I will forgo more details at this time you are welcome to visit us on the web at www.bequickhorseshoeing.com

The weather is changing to sunshine and longer daylight I wish for time and health to all human and equine partners. Let’s make plans for time spent together. Val

June 30

It is unbelievable that June will turn to July.  I never know where the time goes. At this time I wanted to let you all know that I truly enjoyed writing this past month. It is my hope that I was able to share some valuable information.

I work to maintain a routine amount of riding each week. I may choose to ride early in morning before full sunlight or later in the evening after max heat of the day. The rest of the work world will fit between if I just plan a bit. The time I spend learning and living is the deposit I make to my personal happiness account.  I maintain a personal belief that the animals in our care are a great responsibility and a great joy.

Whether you work with your horses on a basic routine at home or travel extensively they all have basic needs. I strive to assist all owners gain knowledge needed to meet these needs. I have the greatest hope that the community established within the Holistic Horse Coop continues to offer boundless information for the equine enthusiast. My hat is off to the founders for their continued efforts.

We all support the animals and each other. If there is ever any question efforts will be made to find an answer. I am so looking forward to the event in October I expect you all to keep me busy at my booth. Again I wish all the best in whatever equine journey you may be taking. For me nothing does my heart more good then to see a fit energetic horse with a slick and glistening coat. Their bright eyes scream happiness.

Happy trails Val

June28 - Chaffhaye

Hello did not get back to blog as soon as I had hoped but I am here now.

In my daily work this last week I struggled to locate and research a beneficial topic. I noted a large number of people voiced questions and concerns related to the hay available in the area along with the forage feed programs they have in place for there horses. I then discovered an old product that is being updated for the demands and concerns of present day livestock owners. Chaffhaye is called “Pasture-in-a-bag”, it is a minimally processed all natural product that to my knowledge is the closest thing to year round pasture quality forage that you can buy.

Hope this finds everyone well. I was thinking of a way to concisely describe the condition of the equine that is doing well. Below is a description and scale nationally used to determine equine body condition. Please use logic in evaluating variables such as the horse’s age, living conditions, current work level and health history. And as the old adage goes everything in moderation. A score of 5 to 6 is the most desirable. We must also remember energy in and energy out determines fat deposits. With the equine also time spent in the field relates to total amount of forage they can take in. Forage can provide protein and carbohydrates no need for a lot extra processed grain products. Vitamins and minerals are important for all aspects of the body systems function they also aid the equine in digestion and utilization of the forages taken in.
