May Guest Blog -- Lori Northrup

One of our May guest bloggers is Lori Northrup of Golden Stride Walker RanchLori Northrup in New York.

A brief bio from Lori says:  "My life is about horses and long-ears.  I serve as President of FOSH, Friends of Sound Horses Inc., a non-profit horse humane organization that provides education, shows, and events for people with gaited horses, and focuses to bring an end to the abuses of "soring." When not working for FOSH, I am trail riding or playing Parelli with my Tennessee Walking horses and gaited mules..."

Wrap Up

This will  be my final update to you all for a while, although I’d love to hear from you through our web site, www.GoldenStride.com, where we have info on our farm and also some super gaited mule babies for sale!  At this farm this lovely summer, we moved our 4 weanling mules into the “back 40” pasture for a few weeks while this year’s crop of mules are born.  I’d heard some concern that mules can be dangerous for newborn foals, so I thought it might be best to separate them. If anyone has any experience about that topic, I’d love to hear from you.

I’m on an airplane flying back from California to New York, gazing out the window at some of the same territory that we just drove across earlier this month.  I had the opportunity to attend the 4th Annual Light Hands Horsemanship Clinic just held in Santa Ynez, California.

Just finished a 3-day work session with Bucky Sparks from Colorado, who helps folks improve the gait of their gaited horses, with humane, sound, and effective methods.  Bucky worked with my two friends Barb and Mollie and myself, and all together we played with 4 different horses and 2 gaited mules.  What fun!  We got wonderful gait improvement over the three days, and also had a thrill watching the world debut of RFDTV’s Horse Show and seeing Rick Lamb’s great interview and rides at Bucky’s Walking the Dog Ranch in Cortez, Colorado.  We also went for a super Icelandic Horse trail ride this morning with my mother, Alice.  We must have covered a 3-hour trail ride in one hour!  Lori

Today I was at the Light Hands Clinic in Santa Ynez, California featuring about 8 excellent clinicians in natural horsemanship.  Today’s highlights were Dr. Robert Miller, famous for horse imprinting, and speaking on the natural horsemanship revolution, Jon Ensign showing developmental work with a young horse with just the lightest hands and most appreciative approach, and Lester Buckley showing dressage basics with a magnificent stallion responding to the slightest suggestion.  Plus there was some fabulous shopping from western hats and chaps to natural mineral salt from Redmond to Fly Predators from Spaulding.  After a full day of soaking up all this natural horsemanship message, my brain is full, and I’m headed to sleep.  Lori
